I'm a big supporter of the small business, but sometimes one will piss me off.

Located on Mauch Chunk Road, as you come from the light, off of Rt.248 is a small store on the left called the Pyramid. The owner just advertised "We Deliver". So I called in (I live 2 blocks down, but was involved in installing a script on a website) for delivery yesterday evening. A $5.75 item on the menu.

The kid (I call him a kid at my age. He was probably 21) arrives and tells me $8.10. I figure a couple of bucks for built in gratuity to the delivery guy. I called the store and asked about the extra. Does it go to the driver? NOPE. The owner added that for himself. Does the driver use the owners vehicle? NOPE. He pays for his own gas and uses his own car.

Now, how screwed up is that!? The driver says nobody tips him (except me who gave him $2 anyway) and until I told him that the owner was marking up the cost of the food he couldn't figure out why. He knows now. He said he wondered why some meals he was being sent out with seemed a little pricey.

I think most people figured it the way I thought, until I called. That his tip was built in.

The owner of the Pyramid is just an ass for doing that to some poor shmuck trying to eek out a living. Pays him $6/hr to drive all over town and doesn't even give the driver the extra $2 he charges!

I won't be ordering anything from him again. I'll go up to Delaware Ave. and take my business there. I don't support ripoff artists - big or small.

What do you think? Am I being out of line in taking this stance, or do you think the owner is right? Just curious of what others think, as I may be prejudice. Years ago, before I made mine, I actually did deliveries and it irks me to see somebody taken advantage of (IMHO).

That is BS. If the owner is paying for the car/gas, then he has the right to charge a delivery fee. If he makes the kid pay for his own transportation then the driver should get that money! Greedy people! He is just passing on the driver's wages to the customers...and pocketing the rest!

I grew up on Hazard rd and I can remember when Neil did everything to get the store going. As for the delivery issue I will not pay extra for delivery, anytime. I'll just e go get it myself or go without. As for the owner, Yes I'd say he is an ass. Go up to Joes, Tony's or Palmerton Pizza. It's the buisness's that are gonna lose out. Word of mouth is the best advertising, good or bad.

Some restaurants do charge extra for delivery (most will note the delivery charge, though). It does make some sense since they have to take the time and resources to package food that would otherwise just be plated. I'm sure the owner doesn't even realize that he's causing his driver to be short changed. Perhaps a friendly call or a note from a customer would help. Smiley
